Research Facilities and Programs at the National Centre for Accelerator Based Research: An upcoming 3 MV Pelletron facility
 
Content: Low energy accelerators have matured as indispensable tools for interdisciplinary research in almost all areas of Science & Technology. A low energy ion beam facility based on 3.0 MV Pelletron (9SDH-4, NEC) is being commissioned in the Department of Pure & Applied Physics, Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur. It includes high current TORVIS source for proton and He ions as well as SNICS-II for ions of heavier elements. Ions with 50 kV energy are injected into the accelerator tank where after stripping positively charged ions are accelerated by up to 29 MeV for Au. Ion beam analysis techniques being installed include:RBS, PIXE, ERD, NRA and channelling. A low energy negative ion beam line directly from ion source is also being planned for KeV range ion implantation. Considering that present machine can produce high current proton beam using TORVIS source, it can be used for generating neutrons thus extending the facility for neutron activation work. The facilities are targeted for material modifications, PIXE based analysis for pollution monitoring, development of nanostructures, ion implantation etc. Training and development of human resources for nuclear power station and accelerators are also chalked out. The details of ion beam facilities coming up along with off-line characterization tools developed shall be presented in the paper to enable the scientists to deliberate upon the experiments that can be designed using the low energy ions with relatively large current
